OTHER MATTER is an experimental studio working with algae-based bioplastics founded by Jessie French. Through the design of materials, objects, experiences and futures, we invite others to engage with the possibilities of a post-petrochemical world.

In March 2021, OTHER MATTER moved into a vacant shopfront in Melbourne’s CBD. This space is OTHER MATTER’s studio as well as a project space for collaborative bioplastic glazing on ceramics with ceramic studio Fluff Corp. The space is managed by Creative Spaces, a City of Melbourne program.

The space will operate as a studio for production, project meetings, microalgae bioreactors growing pigments used in bioplastic production, exhibitions, events, open studios, talks and workshops.

Other Matter acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung People of the Eastern Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work, whose cultures are among the oldest living cultures in human history and who have one of the longest creative and scientific human histories on Earth. We pay respect to Elders of the community - past, present and emerging - and extend this respect to all First Nations people. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. The place we call home has a rich history and its Indigenous peoples have unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters, seas and all living things within them.
