Studio Workshops

For the first time, we are opening up our studio to offer a program of limited studio workshops. These workshops are rare opportunities for those interested in our practice to not only make and take home their very own Other Matter object, but to gain insight into the inner workings of our studio.

The workshops are designed to share the skills of working with algae-based bioplastic, employing techniques and material innovations developed through our studio research and experimentation. Hosted at our studio in Southbank, the workshops combine artist talks and bioplastic cooking demonstrations with founding artist Jessie French, as well as hands-on making that’ll leave you with your own bioplastic object to take home on the day.

Commencing in 2023, the ticketed workshops will take place roughly every three months, with details to be released periodically.

For now, tickets are released for the first two workshops, detailed below.

2023 PROGRAM:

WORKSHOP 1.0: MINI VESSELS
MARCH 18 2023 | 1PM – 5PM

This workshop is informed by the work of artist and studio founder Jessie French in making large bioplastic vessels. You will make your own miniature vessel to take home — a rare opportunity to collect a unique studio object.

Enjoy a studio tour and live cooking demonstration led by Jessie, as she shares insights into her practice, studio development, and seaweed supply chain research. We’ll then work with pre-made sheets of dry bioplastic to create one-off, customised, hand-stitched miniature vessels that you can take home on the day, using techniques and materials meticulously developed through extensive studio research. This is a limited opportunity to gain insight into the inner workings of our studio.

This workshop is your only opportunity to make and take home your own Other Matter signature bioplastic vessel — a unique and personally customised studio object.

In addition to your vessel, we’ll also gift you a batch of fresh signature Other Matter bioplastic mix for some at-home experimentation.

This workshop preempts the exhibition of Jessie’s large vessels as part of Melbourne Now at the NGV in March 2023.

This is a half-day workshop hosted at our Southbank studio. All materials provided.

Spots are limited to 15 people.

WORKSHOP 1.25: SHALLOW DISHES
JUNE 17 2023 | 1PM – 3PM

In this workshop hosted at our Southbank studio, we will work with pre-made sheets of dried bioplastic to guide you in making your own hand-stitched shallow dish, involving pattern cutting, sewing and finishing. This activity will be led by artist and studio founder Jessie French, and all necessary materials will be provided. The workshop will also include a studio tour and artist talk.

The shallow dish, which you will be able to take home on the day, is a unique and personally customised studio object. This is a rare opportunity to collect a unique Other Matter studio object — and even better, only a select few others will have anything like it.

In addition to your take-home vessel, we’ll also gift you a batch of fresh signature Other Matter bioplastic mix, with which you can experiment at home.

Spots are limited to 15 people.
